Mango Farms Haitian Community Gardens
Oct. 27, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Mango Farms set out to provide a community in Haiti with a safe and sustainable space to grow food and raise animals in addition to partnering with master gardeners and providing agriculture education. Mango Farms farmers will be able to feed their families, earn a living wage by taking produce and animals to market, and provide money for their children's school tuition and other basic living necessities. A Haitian native, Gymps Sunel was raised by his grandmother after losing his parents at age 2. He was educated in Haiti, Martinique, the Dominican Republic and later on in the United States. After Covid-19 hit in 2020, Gymps saw an increase in the number of children and people that were living in poverty and the number of Haitians experiencing hunger plunged to a deeper level, many not knowing where their next meal would come from. It was this realization that led Gymps to find a parcel of land in his home country and the vision of Mango Community Family Farm was born. It is our hope that Mango Farms will provide a safe space for families to grow their own food and be able to provide a sustainable living wage from the proceeds of sales at the market.
Last year Buffalo Rotary partnered with Brooklyn Center Rotary in purchasing the solar well, water storage, and irrigation system for Mango Farms through a District Grant.
Gymps Sunel and Brooklyn Center Rotary member Ellen Schreder join us this Wednesday to talk about Mango Farms.

Buffalo Food Shelf
Jan. 19, 2022 12:00 p.m.
This week Rotary welcomes Fred Naakgteboen, volunteer board member for the Buffalo Food Shelf. Fred will give us updates on the continued need for the BFS, funding changes and talk about upgrades to the facility. The Buffalo Food Shelf serves an ever growing number of families in need of hunger relief. The Buffalo Food Shelf is generously supported by the Buffalo community including local businesses and non profit organizations but also supplements it's budget by teaming with larger food providers such as Second Hand Harvest. The Buffalo Food Shelf is greatful for the generosity of the community and the grace of God that they are able to continue their mission of feeding the people in our community. I hope you saw the false alarm on changes in our meeting procedures. Meetings will continue as they have been: plated meals, tables spaced out and links provided so that members may also attend via zoom. If it's Wednesday, it's Rotary! See you there!

Affective Sober Living by JCS
Jan. 26, 2022 12:00 p.m.
Jennifer Gaines, founder of JCS Sober Living, operates two sober homes in the Minneapolis area. A survivor of sex trafficking herself, Jenny is passionate about having safe homes for women to transition to. Knowing that addiction and prostitution go hand in hand and having personal experience with not being able to talk about prostitution in treatment without judgement, Jenny became motivated to open a sober home. She is a graduate of Breaking Free, a St. Paul based non-profit that works with survivors of sex trafficking and their children. Jenny was also employed at Breaking Free for eight years and spent five years as a HUD Certified Housing Advocate in their housing program. During her time at Breaking Free, Jenny also facilitated support groups, executed public speaking and presentations for fund raising to increase awareness of sex trafficking and was involved in other supportive and administrative services related to housing (which is the number one barrier to women leaving trafficking.) JCS and Breaking Free have an ongoing, supportive relationship and Jenny connects women to Breaking Free and also receives referrals from Breaking Free. Jenny is a Member of MASH and partners with three outpatient treatment providers.

RYLA students Caleb Hultmann and MacKenzie Christensen will report on their Camp RYLA experience. Camp RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) is a fun, intensive leadership experience where attendees develop leadership skills and make connections. This unique experience strengthens leadership skills and capabilities of high school students through physical, mental, emotional, and intellectual challenges. There is an emphasis on problem solving, teamwork, and interaction with other outstanding students and volunteer counselors and presenters.
